2021 Update: Garnier are Leaping Bunny Certified

are Garnier a cruelty free and vegan brand banner

If you follow any of the big names in the cruelty free and vegan beauty world, chances are you’ve seen this already! Cruelty Free International and Garnier paired up this week to bring us the huge and amazing news that Garnier is a cruelty free brand. I think it’s safe to say that not many of us were expecting that!

Garnier have more than ten brand subsidiaries, including Olay hair colour, Pure Active skincare, and Ultimate Blends, which includes body care and haircare.

Garnier was ranked as the 7th most valuable beauty brand worldwide by Brand Finance. Garnier was one of the largest animal testing brands still on the shelves in the UK prior to this announcement, which makes this one of the biggest moves in the cruelty free and vegan community over the last few years.

Are Garnier Cruelty Free?

Yes, Garnier are officially certified cruelty free by Cruelty Free International. Wow, it even feels strange to say that! There are a few vegan products by Garnier that I’m already looking forward to trying, but I know it’ll feel so strange to take a Garnier product to the till knowing it’s cruelty free.

To be clear, Garnier are still owned by L’Oreal, an animal testing organisation. Cruelty Free International still certify brands with animal testing parent companies as cruelty free because they want to show larger corporations that cruelty free brands are sustainable and profitable. (Some people still choose not to purchase from cruelty free brands owned by animal-testing parent companies – click here for more info!)

Cruelty Free International stated:

“Leaping Bunny requires brands to forensically investigate their entire supply chain, including all raw material and individual ingredients, for any cases of animal testing. For Garnier, this was a case of securing evidence from more than 500 suppliers, who source over 3,000 different ingredients for the brand, from across the world.”

Garnier said:

“To be officially approved by Cruelty Free International under the Leaping Bunny programme is a real milestone and was always an important part of our Green Beauty mission. Today Garnier, takes another Green step towards becoming a fully committed, truly sustainable, transparent brand that delivers Green Beauty for all of us.”

Are Garnier Products Vegan?

Garnier do have a wide range of vegan formulas, but there isn’t currently an easy way to shop them. Here, you can shop some of Garnier’s vegan blends, but there isn’t currently a page where you can shop for all of their vegan products. All of their vegan products are labelled as vegan online. Garnier Organic skincare range is completely vegan. Keep an eye out for some reviews of their flagship products over the next few months!
